I’m stoked to be able to announce that I am the artist behind the 2018 Vans World Cup Of Surfing poster and show you what the amazing design team at Vans have done with it!
About 18 months ago I received a call from Vans out of the blue asking to help work on the poster artwork which is part of the famed Vans Triple Crown of Surfing held in Hawaii each year – as far as being a surf artist goes, this is a huge honour – next stop, the holy grail.
Working directly with the Vans International Art Director, David Happekotte, we worked with the brief to paint the famed Sunset Beach break so that it’s recognisable to viewers and true to its character, all within my distinctive painting style. The painting went through a few iterations and was refined several times before we settled on what is now seen. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of developing a composition that would suit all of the forms that Vans and the WSL (World Surf League) would need it for, posters, website, billboards and event signage, shirts, trucker caps and even board shorts – which look amazing!
I’m so grateful and incredibly honoured to be a part of this great event that has been conquered by a lot of my surfing idols, MR, Tom Carroll, Kong, Shane Dorian, AI, Parko and Fanning!
To add to the honour, the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing poster artwork has this year been created by Wade Konaikowsky
– an incredibly talented surf artist that I have looked up to over many years – it’s an amazing feeling to be sharing the this alongside him and representing the greater surf art community on an international stage.
